Artistic Interests
-
Reinterpreting, reimagining, and deconstructing classical texts. Yes, it's mostly a bunch of the same old things written by the same old dead white dudes. But sometimes stories stick around for a reason – let’s examine why, break them apart, and see what’s left.
-
Audience agency and immersion. I love the moment when I as an audience member discover something new and wonder who else has seen the same detail, just out of sight. And I love creating those moments for others.
-
Liveness (and the absence thereof). What are the boundaries of calling a performance “live?” How does a texted selfie perform differently than a letter in the mail does? Are dancing drones onstage actors? Let’s find out!
-
Ambiguity. Boy, I used to hate open-for-interpretation ends to stories. But I’ve done a complete 180 here. Leave empty spaces. Leave room to grow, or gaps for imagination to fill. Pass it along to someone else.
-
Outdoor and site-specific performance. Hate dealing with wireless mics in the park and being at the whim of the weather, but it’s a joy to perform somewhere weird.
-
Bread and Puppet-style light-rehearsal, heavy-impact community performance. With a kind, gentle, intentional-enough on-ramp, anyone can be a performer, and everyone deserves the chance if they want to take it.
-
Collaboration. Ensembles are more than the sum of their parts, in ways that are mysterious, confounding, and beautiful.
